Job Description:

Teaching assistants assist teachers in the classroom . A teaching assistant general works in an elementary school helping with students during recess or lunch. For larger classes, teaching assistants may work with individual or groups of students to ensure all students understand class material. Teaching assistants also generally help with paperwork, straightening up and organizing the classroom as well as aiding students who need extra help on their studies.

Although elementary schools are the most common workplace for teaching assistants, they also have opportunities to work at daycares and preschools. Some school systems also employ teaching assistants at the middle and high school level.

Education and Training:

A teaching assistant does not need special training, other than a high school diploma, to qualify for a position in an elementary school. However, many aspiring teaching assistants pursue an associate’s degree. Certification may also be required, depending on the state and school system regulations. Many teaching assistants must take courses in preparing lesson plans and managing the classroom to be able to work with students in an instructional setting.

To be eligible for employment, a teaching assistant will have to pass a background check that will include a criminal check. Some prior experience working with young children, even as a volunteer, will demonstrate
