Careers: Coaches and Scouts

Coaches help organize, train and motivate the members of the team they are supervising and advising. Their purpose is to help athletes improve their skills, learn new techniques and increase their physical stamina. Job duties include leading drills, holding practice games, watching videos and attending seminars. Coaches will often guide their team members by encouraging a healthy diet and physical exercise as well as helping them learn good sportsmanship.

Scouts are professionals that seek out both amateur and professional talented athletes. They evaluate the skill of an athlete and determine if they would perform well for the team the scout represents.

Scouts work for colleges, professional sports organizations or may be self-employed. Scouts also make connections with coaches, attend games and study videotapes of prospective athletes.

Training and Qualifications/p>

Coaches and Scouts are professionals with a high level of understanding of a particular sport, along with business savvy and the ability to motivate others. Educational requirements of coaches and scouts depend heavily upon the location of employment. Coaches at all levels are generally required to have a bachelor’s degree. Some states require high school coaches be certified by taking a state offered exam. Scouting jobs require experience playing a sport at the college or professional level.
